Seattle’s city council approved a $15 an hour minimum wage on Monday, which will affect around 100,000 workers, reports The Daily Beast.

The northwestern city’s minimum wage will be, by far, the highest minimum wage of any jurisdiction in the country. At $9.32, Washington State also leads the nation in state-level minimum wages, according to CNN Money.

ABC News says that the measure will go into effect on April 1, 2015, with large businesses having three years to comply, as opposed to seven years for small businesses.

Other cities have been planning similar wage increases, such as an increase to $15 for San Francisco and $13 for San Diego. Ken Jacobs, chairman of the UC Berkeley Center for Labor Research and Education says that it’s “likely to see other cities follow suit,” according to the Los Angeles Times.
