The Obama administration requested $500 million from Congress to help train and "empower the moderate Syrian opposition."

If approved, U.S. involvement in Syria's civil war would greatly increase. National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden made the announcement Thursday, indicating the U.S. would "train and equip appropriately vetted elements" of the opposition, according to The New York Times.

"These funds would help defend the Syrian people, stabilize areas under opposition control, facilitate the provision of essential services, counter terrorist threats, and promote conditions for a negotiated settlement," Hayden said.

If approved, this funding would be the most significant action yet by the U.S. in Syria. NYT notes the request comes soon after last month's announcement of a $5 billion counterterrorism fund put to use in the Middle East.
