Montana Judge Who Sentenced Rapist To 30 Days Jail Suspended

In August 2013, Montana Judge Todd Baugh sentenced Stacey Rambold, a teacher convicted of the rape of a 14-year old student who later committed suicide to a mere 30 days in jail, with the remainder of the 15-year sentence suspended. His justification: the victim seemed “older than her chronological age.”

Despite Judge Baugh’s public apologies (in which he called himself a “blithering idiot”) and legal backpedaling, the Montana Supreme Court ruled Wednesday to suspend and publicly censure him for “eroding public confidence in the judiciary” and “creating an appearance of impropriety.” Baugh has (wisely) decided to not seek re-election this year.

“There is no place in the Montana judiciary for perpetuating the stereotype that women and girls are responsible for sexual crimes committed against them,” the Court’s decision read
