What Does It Mean To Be A Feminist?
What keeps buzzing in Hollywood is the word, “feminism.” What is feminism? Why has it become so important? Haven’t women already won the battle for women rights? Is there still more to do?

Feminism, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, means the advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men. Since sexual harassment and abuse has become an issue in colleges and universities across the country, women have decided to stand up against the men who have objectified women as nothing but a sexual toy.
However, not every woman bothers with such topic. Lana Del Rey made a comment on the subject in an interview for the June/July 2014 issue of Fader magazine. She said, “For me, the issue of feminism is just not an interesting concept,” she follows by saying, “I’m more interested in, you know, SpaceX and Tesla, what’s going to happen with our intergalactic possibilities. Whenever people bring up feminism, I’m like, god. I’m just not really interested.”
And you know what Lana, that’s okay!
Not everyone has to take interest in a subject that has caused a global “book club,” especially if that topic pertains to women. When Lana said such comment, tons of people took to the Internet (of course) to give the “Summertime Sadness” singer backlash.
In addition, another victim of feminism backlash is Shailene Woodley. She told Time Magazine why she isn’t a feminist and she said, “I love men, and I think the idea of ‘raise women to power, take the men away from the power’ is never going to work out because you need balance.” She continues on by saying, “I’m 50 percent feminine and 50 percent masculine, same as I think a lot of us are.”
Feminism has a different connotation to every woman. Some connotations are more personal than others through dark experiences women have encountered and what we say to that is this: Choose your own definition of what feminism means to you. Go by what the book dictionary says as a foundation and create a personal meaning for yourself. Let others take care of their ideas and their definitions because after all this is a country based off the freedom to voice their mind.
