House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, 51, was overthrown by an underdog Tea Party challenger—economics professor David Brat—in a stunning primary defeat that will have long-lasting consequences for House Republicans. Cantor becomes the first House majority leader to ever lose his primary election. The results were called late Tuesday evening by the Associated Press.

The upset will likely mean that contentious conservative topics like immigration reform will be tabled for the immediate future and sent Republican leadership into "chaos," according to the National Journal.

The House Republican from Virginia was not only predicted to handily win his reelection bid, but was the heir apparent to House Speaker John Boehner. The stunning upset sent Beltway pundits into such fits that you would have thought Cantor pushed a reporter on to the Metro rail tracks.

Let this be a reminder to politicians that this is the kind of crap that happens when you draw districts to look like Rorschach inkblots.
