California Universities Provide Insufficient Sexual Assault Training

After a UC Berkeley student claimed that school administrators were mishandling allegations of sexual assault and harassment, state legislators requested an audit of the policies and practices of the university, eventually deciding to examine the other three schools as well.

After speaking with over 200 students about their experiences attending the schools in the past five years, auditors found that many resident advisors and athletic coaches receive insufficient training to respond to reports of sexual assault, and that all four schools fail to provide copies of their sexual harassment policies to employees at the start of the school year.
“When they are not sufficiently trained, employees may not know how to interact appropriately with students in these situations and may do something that would discourage students from engaging in the reporting process,” the report stated.
