Alcohol Kills 10 Percent Of Adults
According to a new study released by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 10 percent of all deaths of adults between the ages of 20 and 64 are caused by alcohol abuse.
The causes named by the authors of the study ranged from immediate cause-and-effect correlations like car crashes resulting from intoxication to more long-term conditions like high blood pressure, according to The Daily Beast. Factors like the amount of binge or heavy drinking were determined by participants' self-reporting, which is not always accurate.
Even more shocking and disturbing is the statistic that 71 percent of those adults who die prematurely are male—half of whom die as a direct result of binge drinking. For men, that means five or more drinks in a single occasion. Four or more drinks constitutes binge drinking for women.
What does this mean to all of us? One of of every 10 people you know will likely die from alcohol abuse. If that's not a sobering statistic, nothing is.
