On Friday, more than 40 people were killed in Odessa, Ukraine. Clashes between pro-Russian rebels and Kiev forces were running battles across the southern port of Odessa, says Reuters.

Most of the dead were caught in a union trade building set on fire, police report. This is the first time clashes have resulted in any deaths.

Police said 38 people choked to death on the smoke or killed when trying to jump out of the windows of the building.

Pro-Kiev demonstrators were attacked by a mob throwing fire bombs, stones and "explosive devices" at them, says The Daily Beast. At least four men were killed in the fighting after the march, says Reuters.

The clashes and fire began after the police lost control.
