Who knew it was possible to combine history and entertainment into one? Although it’s easy for us to spend hours upon hours in front of the television, when it comes to studying and learning…it’s not so simple.

Here are some of the best historical TV series that show us we can actually learn from watching shows.

"John Adams"

This show, which seems to be a staple in high school classrooms throughout America, speaks about the experiences of our second president, John Adams. By tracking the progress of the colonies throughout the times prior to the American Revolution, the show not only provides great insight as to what times were like centuries ago, but it’s also very fun to watch. Paul Giamatti really sells the passionate role as one of the Founding Fathers. Clearly, he’s no longer the big fat liar.

"I, Claudius"

Starring the likes of John Hurt and Sir Patrick Stewart, this BBC TV series captured the reign of Roman emperors throughout generations of rulers. From this show, we can see the historical timeline of Rome and the political corruption and romantic love affairs littered throughout the Roman rule. This show, however outdated the special effects are, is immense fun to watch due to the great drama and tragic ordeals that occur all in the name of power.

"Roots"

"Roots" is another show that has been shown to middle school and high school students all over the country. This show tracks the lifetime of captured slave Kunta Kinte as he is enveloped into the peculiar institution of slavery in the newly born country of America. By showing the incredibly strenuous and arduous lifestyles of slaves through this show, producers have been able to capture the cruelties of slavery and the horrendous racism that was so prevalent throughout the United States. Since its first release, "Roots" has become a highly regarded show, but be warned, this show is not for the weak-hearted.

"Downton Abbey"

Although this TV series is more dramatized than the others, "Downton Abbey" is a great historical show that provides audiences today a better understanding of life in the early twentieth century. The TV show addresses major historical events such as the sinking of the Titanic and World War I, all while managing to keep viewers entertained and engaged. What makes this show so interesting is its relevance to not only British history, but world history. Besides its historical relevance, the family drama and love stories webbed throughout the series also makes it extremely fun to watch.
