Tokyo Police Club At The Echoplex: Show Review

Among the mosh pit formation and the recurrent crowd surfing from fans, lead man David Monks seemed unfazed as he enthusiastically demonstrated his vocal and instrumental musicality with his band while maintaining a calm expression.
To say that the show was just "interesting" would be an understatement. The night was filled with a mixture of songs from their new album "Forcefield," and classic throwbacks of their hit singles, "Not Sick" and "Your English is Good."
"How you doing L.A.? It's great to see you again." David commented as he geared up for another song. Since releasing their debut album "Elephant Shell" in 2008, Tokyo Police Club has been back to L.A. numerous times and L.A. was more than happy to bring the welcome wagon.
Usually when an artist performs their new material it's typical for the crowd to get a bit placid, but that wasn't the case at this show.
Whether they sang a new song or an old single, the audience responded actively throughout the night. Perhaps that was why the night seemed to fly by.
One of the best things about this band is the fact that despite them becoming an established name in the indie-sphere, their down to earth nature has positively affected the quality of their music.
While their setlist comprised of old and new songs, you could tell that they stayed with their foundational signature sound--which has listeners coming back for more.
A definite highlight of the night occurred when the band reappeared for an encore and Monks gave the audience an ultimatum: to sing another song with all the works, or to sing a song with only his acoustic guitar, acapella.
Of course, the crowd chose the second option and joined in singing, solidifying the tender dynamic between the city and Tokyo Police Club.
Following the sentimental moment, the band ended the night with bang with the song "Cheer It On" immediately electrifying the audience into a dancing, jumping frenzy.
"Forcefield" is now available for your downloading pleasure on Spotify and iTunes.
