Narendra Modi India's New Prime Minister
Narendra Modi was sworn in as India's 15th prime minister on Monday.
The ceremony was in the forecourt of the presidential palace in Delhi with over 4,000 guests and 10,000 security personnel, says The Daily Beast.
Modi won the general election in a landslide last month. This win is huge for his party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This win helped the BJP gain the majority in parliament and defeat the outgoing Congress Party, according to BBC News.
Among the guests was Pakistan's prime minister Nawaz Sharif. This is the first time since 1947 that the prime minister of one country has attended a ceremony for another prime minister.
Many Indians and Pakistanis believe this ease tensions between the two countries.
"This is a chance to reach out to each other, Both governments have a strong mandate… This could help in turning a new page in our relations," said Sharif.
