Louisiana State Legislature Passes Bill To Limit Abortion
Louisiana State Legislature passed a bill Wednesday that would limit abortion rights and close down three of the state's five abortion clinics.
According to The New York Times, the bill by the Republican-controlled Legislature requires that doctors who perform abortions have admitting priviledges in hospitals. Similar laws have already passed in southern states like Texas, Alabama and Mississippi.
Though the bill's creators insist it was written to protect women's safety, many medical experts and pro-choice advocates say it's a "thinly disguised effort" to shut down clinics and reverse the resulting law from Roe v. Wade, the article says.
In a statement made Wednesday, Planned Parenthood Federation of America Preident Cecile Richards said the organization is "deeply concerned that women in a vast stretch of this country are in real danger of losing the ability to access legal abortion safely.”
The Louisiana House of Representatives passed the legislation Wednesday by an 88-to-5 vote.
