General Motors announced the recall of 51,640 SUVs because of inaccurate fuel gauges on Saturday.

The company said it is recalling 2014 models of Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia because of a software problem that can produce faulty readings on the fuel tanks.

The readings can be faulty on either the high or the low end, which causes a higher accident risk. If a driver unknowingly runs out of fuel, the car will stall and it is more likely that the vehicle will crash, GM admitted.

The auto company has been under fire for recalling millions of cars this year alone in relation to ignition problems. The latter has been responsible for at least 12 deaths.

As for the faulty fuel tanks, dealers will reprogram the software completely free of charge, GM said.
