USC Genocide Awareness and Prevention Month

The USC Shoah Foundation Student Association (SFISA), along with other organizations such as Hillel at USC, Undergraduate Student Government (USG), Jewish World Watch (JWW), USC Armenian Student Association, USC STAND: The Anti-Genocide Coalition and SC Students for Israel (SCSI), have planned programs for Genocide Awareness and Prevention Month all month long.

The purpose of the month is to create an impact on students. “Increasing awareness is the single most important thing that we can do as students to make a difference, and stand up against apathy in the face of human suffering,” SFISA President Nora Snyder said.

1. Honoring the Armenian Masters

The Hammer Museum and the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music will commemorate the Armenian Genocide on Apr. 16 at 7:30 p.m. through a chamber music program of masterworks of Armenian classical music. "Honoring the Armenian Masters" is a free event, and tickets are first come first serve.

Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day is on April 24.

2. Walk to End Genocide

Jewish World Watch’s 8th annual Walk to End Genocide is on Sunday, Apr. 27 in Pan Pacific Park from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mayor Eric Garcetti is one of the 2014 Honorary Committee Co-Chairs for the event. USC has its own team that anyone can join, and individual registration is also available.

3. I Never Saw Another Butterfly Project

Honor children of the Holocaust by decorating a banner of butterflies on USC's Trousdale Parkway Apr. 21 through Apr. 24. Anyone can help with the banner from 10 a.m - 2 p.m throughout the week.

4. 99 Years of Denial

99 Years of Denial will commemorate the Armenian Genocide on Thursday, Apr. 24 from 12-2 p.m. in front of Tommy Trojan. On Wednesday, Apr. 16 there is a discussion about the Armenian Genocide led by Movses Ter-Oganesyan and Gevork Nazaryan in the Tutor Campus Center (TCC) room 227. Both events will honor the 1.5 million victims of the Armenian Genocide.

5. Genocide Awareness Shabbat

USC Hillel is holding a Genocide Awareness Shabbat, where there will be a candle lighting, services and dinner from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, Apr. 25. On almost every Friday night USC Hillel offers Shabbat services and dinner, but this event is specifically for Genocide Awareness Month.

6. Yom HaShoah Ceremony

Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah) is on Sunday, Apr. 27. USC Hillel's Yom HaShoah Ceremony is on Monday, Apr. 28 from 4-6 p.m.

7. Women of the Holocaust, Cambodia and Rwanda

On Tuesday, Apr. 29 three genocide sruvivors will discuss their experiences at the Tutor Campus Center (TCC) room 205 from 6:30-8 p.m. The panel will be a conversation between women who survived the Holocaust, the Cambodian Genocide and the Rwandand Genocide, respectively.
