Large crowds gathered to watch as former pontiffs John XXIII and John Paul II were officially granted sainthood on Sunday morning.

The historical event brought an estimated 800,000 people to St. Peter's Square in Vatican City.

Pope Francis  performed the dual canonization on the pair, which marks the first of its kind in history. In another first, two living popes were in attendance at the ceremony. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI was also amongst the crowd.

During their papacy, John XXIII and John Paul II were praised for their humanity. Both came from humble beginnings and were carried to their level of recognition because of their faith in Catholicism. The two were loved and respected by many.
