It's official - Twitter launched a massive redesign today, confirming rumors that have been circulating since February. The official Twitter blog confirmed Tuesday that within the next few weeks all users will be subject to the redesign. Currently, the changes are only visible to a select number of Twitter users but can be accessed immediately after registering a new account.

The redesign bears uncanny similarities to one of the company's direct competitors - Facebook - sparking buzz throughout the tech community. This new look reflects the company's newfound initiative towards "rich visuals" as opposed to highlighting text-only posts instead.

"Larger background images" are featured and, much like Facebook a user can view his or her photos and friends in a tile-style layout on the far left of the page.

Twitter's redesign also brings each user's most engaging tweets to the forefront of feeds for maximum outreach. To sweeten the deal, users can also pin a favorite tweet to the top of his or her page - a new feature that is very similar to Facebook's "status update" option.
