Supreme Court Rules On Campaign Contributions

A ruling by the United States Supreme Court on campaign finance laws on Wednesday delivered a huge blow to the limits on campaign contributions. The court ruled that capping the total amount of money an individual can give to political campaigns and parties are unconstitutional.

The court's Republican-appointed justices joined in overturning the limits on the grounds that they violated the First Amendment. Democratic appointees, however, insist that the caps are constitutional and a means to protect against corruption.

The 5-4 federal court ruling is the latest in a series that are loosening up the laws on campaign contributions, giving wealthier Americans a bigger role in elections.
