In late February, Ben & Jerry’s announced that the company would be debuting new ice cream flavors. These four new “Core” flavors, as they’re known, is different from other Ben & Jerry’s products because they feature a specific core filling in the center of the pint and a “multitude of chunks” in the ice cream flavors themselves.

The four new flavors include: “Hazed and Confused,” “Peanut Butter Fudge,” “That’s My Jam” and “Salted Caramel.” The “core” part of each pint features a gooey, sticky, sweet “line” down the middle of two featured flavors. “Hazed and Confused” features hazelnut and chocolate ice creams laden with fudge chips and has a hazelnut fudge core; “Peanut Butter Fudge” includes peanut butter and chocolate ice creams with mini peanut butter cups and contains a peanut butter fudge core; “That’s My Jam” features raspberry and chocolate ice creams with fudge chips and a raspberry core; and “Salted Caramel” presents sweet cream ice cream with blonde brownie chunks and a salted caramel core.

These new flavors were supposed to hit store shelves in March, according to Buzzfeed, and are now available in stores nationwide. These “all-in-one sundaes” cost $4.39 each.

Ever since I heard the news about these “Core” flavors, I’ve been on the lookout for them and have been scoping out the ice cream section every time I go grocery shopping. I searched throughout all of March; alas, to no avail.

But recently (last week), I found all four original “Core” flavors—plus a newer one called “Karamel Sutra” (caramel and chocolate ice creams with fudge chips and a soft caramel core)—at Target. Note: The sign on the freezer door said these flavors were a “Target exclusive.”

Of course, I’ve been waiting for more than a month to try these new concoctions so I decided to buy “Hazed and Confused” and “Peanut Butter Fudge.” Both are supposed to appeal to hazelnut/peanut butter-chocolate fanatics, so those were the obvious ones for me to try first.

Here’s what the inside of "Hazed and Confused" looked like.

True to the pint’s description, this mixture did include distinct chocolate and hazelnut ice cream flavors (with mini chocolate chips) and a soft hazelnut core. It was a nice, creamy blend. I don’t mind strong hazelnut, but the hazelnut flavor included in this mix was not overpowering. It balanced nicely with the chocolate, and the chocolate chips provided extra texture and crunch. I loved being able to taste the three different parts of the pint—chocolate, hazelnut and extra hazelnutty core—featured all in one bite.

“Peanut Butter Fudge” also did not disappoint. Any Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups lover will surely love this one. The creamy peanut butter and chocolate ice cream flavors form the perfect blend, and the tiny morsels of peanut butter cups add to the sweet flavor. The peanut butter fudge core tops this flavor off. It’s definitely sweeter than its hazelnut counterpart, so if you want a lighter flavor, “Hazed and Confused” is a better choice, but if you prefer the stronger, more decadent chocolate-peanut butter combo, then “Peanut Butter Fudge” is perfect for you.

Ben & Jerry’s is known for their unconventional and uniquely named flavors (“Phish Food” or “Pistachio, Pistachio,” anyone?), but these “Core” additions—at least, the “Hazed and Confused” one that I tried—live up to the hype. With just one scoop, you do get all the flavors included in the mix, whether it’s the ice cream, extra toppings (chocolate chips) swirled in and the gooey core goodness.
