Prom Date Rejection May Have Led To Stabbing
A 16-year old girl was stabbed in a Connecticut high school on Friday. Police took a teenage boy into custody, investigating if he did this because she rejected his invitation to prom.
Emergency responders arrived at the school around 7:15AM, Friday morning, according to Associated Press. Staff members and paramedics tried to save her life, but she was pronounced dead at Bridgeport Hospital, police said.
The victim was identified by the Superintendent Elizabeth Feser, as Maren Sanchez, a junior at Jonathan Law High School in Milford, says The Daily Beast. She was in the National Honor Society.
The name of the teenage boy was not released because of juvenile offender laws, says Police Chief Keith Mello. The investigators believe he stabbed Sanchez to death because she rejected his offer to go to prom.
The prom was scheduled for Friday night. In light of these events, the prom was postponed.
A candle light vigil was organized on the beach of Milford to honor Sanchez.
Superintendent Feser said at a news conference, "We are obviously devasted by the loss of one of our students, Maren Sanchez. The Jonathan Lock Community mourns greatly the loss of Maren, and our thoughts and prayers go out to her family.
