Boehner Says No Guns For Mentally Ill

In a major reversal of opinion, House Speaker John Boehner told The Hill today that, “There’s no question that those with mental health issues should be prevented from owning weapons or being able to purchase weapons” following another shooting at Fort Hood on Wednesday.

A number of shootings in recent years, including one at Fort Hood in 2009, have repeatedly brought about calls for more stringent gun control legislation. Despite this, both Democrats and Republicans in Congress have been resistant to passing gun control legislation.

This shooting, however, may prove to be the tipping point after several legislators stood outside the Capitol on Thursday calling for changes. 

“This issue we need to continue to look at to find a way to keep guns out of the hands of people who shouldn’t have them,” Boehner told The Hill.
