At least 12 Nepalese guides have been killed by an avalanche that swept down the hill of Mount Everest on Friday. Four are reported missing from the tragedy and several more have suffered from injuries.

Krishan Lamsal, a Napal Tourism Ministry official, told the Associated Press that the Sherpa guides were fixing the ropes for other climbers since early morning when the avalanche struck them. Although the rescuers, climbers and guides desperately rushed for rescue the moment after the incident occured, there were only few remaning survivors.

Four survivors were severely injured, which forced the rescuers to transport them via helicopter. The other four survivors were taken to the foothill town of Lukla, where they could be evacuated by Saturday.

The bodies of 12 unfortunate Sherpa guides were discovered under a large pile of snow and ice.

Rescue workers are continuing their search in the area for any signs of the four missing guides.
