Construction at the World Cup stadium in Brazil, which is supposed to be complete by the tournament’s opening in less than three months, was halted after a man fell to his death over the weekend, ABC News reported.

The 23-year-old man, Fabio Hamilton da Cruz, fell about 26 feet when working on installing temporary seats at the Itaquerao Stadium in Sao Paulo on Saturday, The Guardian reported.

At the time of the accident, Da Cruz did not connect himself to a safety cable, as according to witnesses he only had a “quick thing” to finish at the site, ABC News reported.

Da Cruz was alive when he was taken to the hospital, but died from his injuries hours later, BBC reported.

Officials halted the installation of the temporary seats until the constructors, Fast Engenharia, implement additional safety measures.

"Company directors on Tuesday will analyze the technical demands made by (labor officials) and then will make an announcement about the case and its consequences to the construction timetable," Fast Engenharia said in its statement.

Jerome Valcke, secretary general of FIFA, commented on the accident via Twitter this past weekend.

“Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a worker at Arena São Paulo today. My thoughts and condolences are with his family & colleagues.”

The Itaquerao site was one of the six stadiums that was not finished at the end of last year, as requested by FIFA, ABC News reported.

Da Cruz’s death was the seventh death in the construction site of World Cup venues so far, ABC News reported.
