Vote Counting Begins in Afghanistan Presidential Election

About seven out of 12 million Afghans casted votes Saturday in Afghanistan’s first-ever democratic election, the BBC reported.

Votes are being tallied in the historic election which had a huge turnout, but observers said the count would likely take a week to finalize.

Afghans are choosing who will take over for President Hamid Karzai after his 12 years as the country’s leader.

Afghanistan received praise from around the world for going through with its democratic election despite threats from the Taliban, Fox News reported Sunday.

"These elections are critical to securing Afghanistan's democratic future, as well as continued international support,” President Barack Obama said in a statement Saturday.

CNN reported that every man, woman and child was frisked before entering polling stations, and there have been no major attacks at the capital.
