A Chicago-based pediatrician and two other Americans were killed on Thursday after a hospital guard opened fire outside of a hospital in Afghanistan's capital.

The guard who opened fire was part of the Afghan Public Protection Force and was assigned to guard the CURE International Hospital in Kabul.

Among the dead was Dr. Jerry Umanos, a well-respected pediatrician, as well as a father and son team.  A nurse was injured in the attack.

No motive for the attack has been identified by local officials or the U.S. Embassy.
