9 Unique Ways To Eat Matzah
If you're Jewish, you're likely dreading the boring, constipation-inducing cracker that is matzah. Come April 14, Jews will avoid leavened bread for eight days and instead substitute matzah as a carb. If you're not sure how to eat your matzah besides slapping peanut butter on it, have no fear - here are nine creative and delicious ways to enjoy matzah and satisfy your carb craving this Passover:
Okay, this first one might sound strange, but it works! Since the "sandwich creators" at Subway make your sandwich in front of you, bring two pieces of matzah with you and have them make a sandwich out of it! That way, you'll feel like you can pile on the toppings without having the bread.
2) Matzah pizza
This one is a classic, and super easy to make. Just spread tomato sauce, cheese and your favorite toppings on a piece of matzah and bake it until it is cooked. It's also portion controlled because each piece isn't too big, and you could substitue wheat matzah instead.
This is a great option if you have some extra time to prepare breakfast, or if you're in the mood for breakfast for dinner. Simply break up a matzah square into smaller pieces drained in hot water and mix them in a bowl with eggs or egg whites. Cook them on a frying pan for about 10 minutes, and serve with your favorite maple syrup and some salt or pepper.
4) Chocolate toffee matzah bark
If you have a sweet tooth or need something for a Passover potluck, this is the dessert for you. Check out this recipe, which includes butter, brown sugar, and chocolate chips. It's the type of recipe that will last you a few days if you bake enough bark.
5) Matzah ball soup
Another classic, this delicious meal includes matzah meal, spices and usually carrots. While harder to make, it's a great option if you're feeling sick or want a hot, filling dinner.
This is another great dessert option that is also made from matzah meal, and is often cut into the shape of biscotti. It's great with coffee and can include chunks of chocolate and sprinkled cinnamon.
7) Matzah granola
If you're looking for a good mid-day snack that's also healthy, this is for you. It includes crushed matzah, chopped walnuts, honey, dried fruit and more. Check out this Martha Stewart recipe, which is also an easy food to prepare that lasts several days.
8) Matzah bagels
One of the easiest ones to make, this is another good breakfast option. Simply spread cream cheese, lox, sliced tomato or your other favorite bagel sandwich toppings.
This is a fun food to make with friends. It works like a regular s'more since matzah is hard like a graham cracker, though be careful because it breaks more easily. All you need are some chocolate bars, marshmallows, and small pieces of matzah. You can take it up a notch by drizzling chocolate sauce on top or substituting with chocolate matzah. Yum.
