It's peanut butter jelly time! Today is the day to celebrate your favorite childhood lunchbox staple, the peanut butter and jelly sandwich. In the United States, April 2 is National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day.

It is believed that American soldiers created the peanut butter and jelly sandwich during World War II. During this time, both peanut butter and jelly were on the rations menu for the United States military. To make peanut butter sandwiches more palatable, soldiers added jelly. The rest is history.

National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day originally celebrated the peanut butter and jelly sandwich, but nowadays, peanut butter and jelly can be found in a variety of recipes.

Here are five peanut butter and jelly recipes that will make you thank the veteran geniuses of World War II:

Chocolate Peanut Butter and Jelly Cups:

This recipe is a great twist on the traditional peanut butter cup. It is also a perfect recipe for all you non-bakers, as it does not call for the use of an oven. All you need is peanut butter, jelly, powdered sugar, coconut oil and some chocolate, and you'll be good to go. If you're someone who loves a great mixture of salty and sweet, you can also add a pinch of sea salt to the top of your finished cup.

If you're not too into shortbread cookies, feel free to substitute them with any other butter cookie or with graham crackers! It's your parfait; so add what you please. I'm sure the recipe would also taste great with granola!

Peanut Butter and Jelly Ice Cream:

With the coming of spring comes the sun. So, here's something sweet to ward off the heat. This recipe is pretty simple, as it is made the same way you would make plain ice cream. About 52 percent of Americans choose creamy peanut butter over crunchy peanut butter. This recipe calls for creamy peanut butter, whole milk, cornstarch, kosher salt, heavy cream, granulated sugar, jelly and ice water.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Tiramisu

Before you go ahead and decide to pass up on this recipe, let me explain. This is not a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on top of an Italian favorite. Instead, think of it more as a layered peanut butter and jelly cake that is baked in a way that resembles tiramisu. All you need for this recipe is peanut butter, cream cheese, confectioners sugar, vanilla extract, jam, ladyfingers, raspberries and shaved chocolate.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Pie Sticks:

This recipe is pretty self-explanatory. We have these mini pies on popsicle sticks. All you need is all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, unsalted butter, cream cheese, buttermilk, peanut butter, jam, an egg and heavy cream. Though the picture makes this recipe seem a bit intimidating, the directions are actually pretty simple and straightforward. So get baking and enjoy.
