Founder of the Westboro Baptist Church, Fred Phelps, died Thursday of natural causes at the age of 84. Westboro Baptist Church gained infamy for its fire and brimstone anti-gay preachings, and for their practice of protesting the funerals of American soldiers, among others, with slogans like “God Hates Fags,” and “Thank God for 9/11.”

Phelps is survived by his wife and 13 children. His estranged son, Nathan Phelps, said his father had been excommunicated from the Kansas-based church in August 2013. Westboro has not commented on the excommunication claim, and has said there will be no funeral for Phelps.
