USC Baseball Head Coach Dan Hubbs had to be beyond pleased with the way his team rebounded from an initial 5-1 loss to the Mustangs with a 16-0 win in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader. Coach Hubbs admitted, "The kid who pitched the first game [Matt Imhof, LHP] was really good. He's supposed to be a first- or second-rounder and he pitched that way. He was really pounding the zone on both sides of the plate--he had a good curve ball and kind of kept us off balance… Wyatt [Stahan] battled and then they scored a couple of runs to break it open a little bit  late and  we weren't able to do anything offensively. Second game, we were able to make a statement a little bit early which was good for us and I thought Bobby pitched outstanding today, Bobby Wheatley was awesome. This is a team that can really hit, and for him to hold them to two hits in seven innings and strike out the last five guys he faced--I think that says a lot about how he threw. I think Sean Adler and Kyle Davis did a great job when they came in."

"Offensively, I think Jake [Hernandez] was the big guy today, he had four hits. It was nice to see [Blake] Lacey get back in the lineup and I think he just provided a little spark. He had a sac fly and walked three times but I thought he had some good at-bats that kind of started rallies… I thought Dante [Flores] had a good game the second game. I was really pleased where we were and we just have to do that again on Tuesday when we play Irvine… Irvine is a team that is hot right now, they're pitching extremely well. They haven't been swinging the bats great, but they have two first or second team All-Americans in the middle of the order with Taylor Sparks and Connor Spencer, so we're going to have our hands full with them."

"Unfortunately, we did not get three games in today, but I thought we pitched well for the most part today and we just need to continue to do that."

Sophomore LHP Bob Wheatley was the winning pitcher of Game 2, throwing seven shutout innings while surrendering only two hits, and a career record of 10 strikeouts--dropping his ERA to 0.47. After his outing, Wheatley reflected on the pressure of beating Cal Poly.

"We definitely know they're a good team, they're ranked… Doubleheaders are a different challenge because you have to flush away the result of the first game, win or lose. We did a good job of that--we just let it go after a disappointing first game, and we ended up playing well in the second one."

How did Wheatley do it? The young sophomore replied, "I just had the same mentality that I always have. I just try to attack hitters with my best stuff and then whatever happens, happens. They played great defense behind me... and Jeremy [Martinez] did a great job behind the plate and we came out on top."

Wheatley also offered some insight into the Trojans' upcoming game Tuesday at UC Irvine. "They're always really good. They execute well because they're well coached, so it's going to be a challenge. We know, playing in California and playing in the Pac-12, any team we play is going to come to play, and we know they're going to be a good team. We'll see what happens on Tuesday; we're ready to go."

Senior infielder Kevin Swick had a stellar performance at Dedeaux, going 3-4 with three runs scored, raising his average to .364. According to Swick, the Game 2 comeback was an important step for this squad.

"I think it was a changing point for the team actually. Last year, it would have been really tough to come back like that after losing a tough game. Guys just had a sense that we had a job to do and that was to defend our turf and win the game. The best part was we just kept producing more and more runs which we hadn't really been doing--it was kind of cool to see the bats come alive."

Looking ahead to UC Irvine, Swick said, "UC Irvine is always a good squad; they like to play small ball. The field is kind of like Dedeaux so the ball doesn't really travel. If we are going to be successful, we have to be low and hard--a lot of ground balls through the infield. If we do that, I think we'll be able to take care of business."

Senior infielder Jake Hernandez led the Trojans, going 4-5 with two runs scored, finishing the game with a .469 batting average.

"The bats kind of woke up in game two versus game one," said Hernandez. "In Game 1, we kind of came out a little flat, a little tired. But it showed in Game 2 that we didn't want to get swept on our own field. It definitely helped having big Bob Wheatley pitch for us and shut them down while we keep on adding runs--it worked for us."

In response to his incredible game at Dedeaux tonight, Jake said, "It feels great. I definitely want to keep it going for future games…Our lineup is right on--16 runs never hurts, so that was good to see--and our defense is playing well and we just have to keep it going and stay away from the injuries."

For the Trojans to keep the momentum alive against the Anteaters, Hernandez said the team just needs to keep doing what they're doing. "We just have to stick to our approaches. Pitchers just have to attack the zone and hitters just have to stay small and short… stay short to the ball and stick to the middle."

It's still early in the season, and the relatively young and green Trojans team is no lock to continue its stellar record. However, fans are still hopeful after Sunday night's out-of-the park performance against a nationally ranked squad. Now 8-2, the Trojans will head to UC Irvine to play the Anteaters at 6:30 on Tuesday night.
