U.S. Court Upholds Texas Abortion Restrictions
Thursday's decision allows for state officials to force the closure of 20 abortion clinics. The lower court's decision, which was overturned, said that Texas' abortion rules violated the U.S. Constitution and "served no medical purpose."
Texas' restrictions, some of the toughest in the country, require "abortion doctors to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital and placed strict limits on doctors prescribing abortion-inducing pills," according to the Washington Post.
Supporters of abortion rights say that the tough restrictions are an attempt by Texas Republicans to stop all abortions.
In Thursday's decision, the appeals court said Texas' laws "on its face does not impose an undue burden on the life and health of a woman."
