Twitter To Get Its Own Billboard Chart
Twitter and Billboard announced their multi-year partnership on Thursday. Their project, which will be known as the Billboard Twitter Real-Time Charts, will allow the social media giant, which has about 240 million monthly active users, to track conversations about U.S. music.
Twitter has said that the conversations used to create the chart will be filtered to remove the negative conversations from influencing the chart. Only positive mentions of music will be used to create the chart. However, the exact methodology behind the chart is still unknown.
According to Billboard, part of the initiative will include Billboard and Twitter have signed a Twitter Amplify partnership, which “will help distribute the chart beyond Billboard.com and include custom in-Tweet video round up of the week in music on Twitter.”
Billboard has pushed to use social media more since 2010 with the introduction of the Social 50 artist chart. Social media, like YouTube and Spotify, have also been used to influence Billboard charts in the past. The new chart, though, is expected to be revolutionary in the world of music. The chart is expected to allow all artists - not just the most widely known, popular artists - a chance to climb the chart.
The chart is expected to launch in the upcoming weeks.
