Shailene Woodley Calls 'Twilight' Love Story 'Toxic'
Last year, she starred alongside Miles Teller in “The Spectacular Now.” This year, she will star in indie drama, “White Bird in a Blizzard,” and highly-anticipated young-adult adaptations, “Divergent” and “The Fault in Our Stars.”
With “Divergent” hitting theaters next week, all eyes are on Woodley’s performance, as well as the film itself.
In a recent interview with Teen Vogue, she admitted to being hesitant in accepting the coveted role of heroine Tris Prior, but Jennifer Lawrence, of “Hunger Games” fame and success, convinced her.
“I asked Jennifer Lawrence, 'Are you happy with your choice to take on 'The Hunger Games?' And she said she wouldn't change it for the world. She told me, 'There are some things—don't make a sex tape, don't do drugs, don't do things in public—that you wouldn't want other people judging you for. But this is the best decision you'll ever make,’” Woodley told the magazine.
She also said that the script is what drew her to “Divergent,” because not all young adult franchises, namely “Twilight,” have as much substance to them.
“'Twilight,' I'm sorry, is about a very unhealthy, toxic relationship,” Woodley explained. “She falls in love with this guy and the second he leaves her, her life is over and she's going to kill herself! What message are we sending to young people? That is not going to help this world evolve.”
Whereas “Divergent,” which centers on a divided society under a tyrannous government, “is so metaphorical to today’s society,” Woodley told the Daily Beast.
