Russia Threatens Assault On Crimea

Russian President Vladimir Putin has given Ukrainian forces in the Crimea region fewer than than 10 hours - until 7pm Pacific time tonight - to surrender or face assault by the Russian military units that deployed to the region over the past week. 

Ukrainian forces, however, have shown no sign of preparing to surrender and lay down their weapons. As the clock continues to tick it appears very doubtful that an alternative to open combat will be reached in the proverbial 11th hour.

In the meantime, the United States has been trying desperately to come up with strategies that will motivate Russia to avoid war with Ukraine. President Obama and the rest of NATO appear totally unwilling, at least currently, to get involved militarily in the region.

The most stinging rebuke towards Russian action from an American source came from Secretary of State John Kerry who told CBS’ “Face the Nation” that Moscow’s actions are “really a stunning, willful choice by President Putin to invade another country.”
