Oscar Pistorius has entered a plea of not guilty at the start of his trial in South Africa. Pistorius admits that he did shoot his former girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day last year, but claims that he believed she was an intruder and that it was not premeditated. 

International media interest in the case is so high that this will be the first time in South Africa’s history that parts of a trial will be televised around the world.

If Pistorius is found guilty of premeditated murder, the charge that the state prosecutors are pursuing, he could face life imprisonment.

Trials in South Africa do not have juries like those in the United States, and thus Pistorius’ fate lies in the hands of Judge Thokozile Matilda Masipa.
