President Barack Obama has ordered the U.S. Treasury Department to introduce sanctions against Russia over its invasion and occupation of the Ukraine's Crimean peninsula.

Thursday's announcement of sanctions is designed to push Russia into pulling back its troops from Crimea, the pro-Russian autonomous region of the Ukraine that has indicated it will seek a referendum next week to formally become a part of Russia.

Obama also told reporters that the U.S. would work to mobilize the international community to "condemn Russia's violation of international law."

Following Obama's announcement on Thursday, the president called Russian President Vladimir Putin and discussed a diplomatic solution to resolve the conflict.

According to the White House, Obama told Putin that resolution of the dispute would involve Russian forces withdrawing from Ukranian territory and direct talks between the Ukraine, Russia, and international monitors.
