The Chicago district of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) ruled Wednesday that Northwestern football players are allowed to unionize because they count as school employees.

The NLRB pointed to the fact that athletes receive compensation from the school in the form of scholarships and that coaches have a similar control over their players that an employer has over an employee.

But Northwestern does not agree and plans to appeal the decision.

The players wanted the right to unionize to address issues they claim the NCAA have ignored, such as the right to protect the scholarships for injured athletes.
