A magnitude 5.1 earthquake shook Los Angeles area Friday night. Although there was no casualty or structural damage reported, the shake resulted in minor gas leaks, water pipe damages and blackouts in the nearby community.

The earthquake that lasted for couple of seconds struck at about 9:09 p.m. PT. The epicenter was in Orange County, one mile east of La Habra. 38 aftershocks followed the initial jolt, the largest which was M3.6. However, none of them were fatal shake.

According to CNN, police and local fire department assessed the affected area and found no significant structural damages, and only one minor injury was reported in Orange County.

USGS assumes that the quake was associated with the Puente Hills thrust, which is a blind thrust fault that extends north and west towards the City of Los Angeles. The identical fault has previously caused a M5.9 shake back in 1987.

Friday’s shake will be the second earthquake in the area in two weeks. The former rattled downtown Los Angeles with a M4.4 shake that did not cause any significant damage.

The frequent earthquakes recently have raised some concern for the possible eruption in San Andreas fault that is speculated to be capable of a deadly M8.1.
