A son and daughter sit on a couch to hear the story of how their father met their mother. Little did they know that the story would take almost nine years.

That's the way "How I Met Your Mother" all started on Sept. 19, 2005.

After nine seasons and over 200 episodes later, Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) is less than  48 hours away from the moment he finally meets The Mother (Cristin Milioti).

On Monday night when "How I Met Your Mother" wraps up its amazing run with an hour-long series finale, the kids and everyone watching will get to the end of the story.

Throughout the seasons there have been close calls with The Mother, also known as the Girl with the Yellow Umbrella, and before Milioti joins the cast we see the developing relationships and lives of our five favorite MacLaren's regulars.

All the while the television show has made incredible connections with its fans, simply by the sense of humor and its familiarity. Like any show that keeps its entire cast with the addition of Milioti in the final season, and its stable crew, the CBS sitcom has kept its consistency over the years.

Though we didn't meet The Mother until the eighth season, her character development throughout Season Nine made us all familiar with the woman Ted is destined to be with, bringing her into the cast naturally.

"How I Met Your Mother" gained such a large fan base, and as a show like this would expect, its viewers began to feel like they were simply sitting in the next booth over at MacLaren's, listening to Ted Mosby dream of finding his One True Love. #HIMYM even became a trending hashtag on Twitter.

We've taken on the Olive Theory from the Pilot episode to using phrases like "suit up" and "lawyered." We've seen Barney make the ultimate play of all plays (known as "The Robin") and Marshall and Lily experience the trials of marriage. Suddenly, the wait to find out the major story behind the entire show feel that long.

Neil Patrick Harris, who plays Ted's maybe not best friend Barney Stinson, says the show required the kind of time it took over nine years, according to NY Daily News

"Sometimes when a show is thrust into success right away, there are high expectations to come up with terrific stuff super fast. We got to develop a great vocabulary and weird little inside jokes. I liked the slow-burn elements," Harris said.

It's no wonder that a show about such strong friendship and love could tug at the hearts of its viewers, and there is no doubt that there will be heartfelt moments that lead to tears both in the audience and the cast during the series finale.

Though there has been speculations about a spin-off show, Carter Bays, a co-writer and created of the show with Craig Thomas, said "When the final show is filmed, this world is closed."

So this is it. Last call at MacLaren's.
