Katy Perry Goes Egyptian: Music Video Roundup
Every other week, Editor Mara Hyman takes a look at the buzz-worthy short films coming from the music video universe. Here are her latest picks:
Katy Perry - "Dark Horse"
As Katy's latest single, "Dark Horse" has a very different vibe from her past work. The song has a slight hip hop flair, with a strong beat and more mysterious lyrics. It definitely works for her, as Katy performed the song well at the Grammys.
The video, however, is questionable. Like with her Grammy performance, most people likely expected her to have a similar vibe in the video with dark colors and a literal horse. However, it takes place in Ancient Egypt with Katy playing a Cleopatra/sorceress type of role. The video is very colorful in intricate, and since Katy is known for her over-the-top and crazy videos, this kind of worked in that sense. It's a bit random and sporatic, but it's just Katy being Katy. The video recently received some criticism from Muslim critics for a scene involving an Islamic symbol, which is removed. Is the video too different from the meaning of the song?
Karmin - "I Want it All"
Karmin is making a comeback! As the second single off of their sophomore album, "I Want it All" can best be described as groovy - it has an old-school disco flair mixed with modern. It's also different because Amy sings the entire time and doesn't rap - and her legitimate singing voice is surprisingly good. Nick doesn't do too much, but he adds to some of the harmony.
The video, as predicted, takes place at a roller rink/club. It plays a lot with different colored lights and shadows for a cool effect. For the first time in a video, we see Amy and Nick actually interacting as a couple, dancing together on the dance floor and even getting a little too cozy at the very end. All in all, the video is fun and lighthearted, reflecting the feel of the song. Are you still following Karmin?
Cassadee Pope - "I Wish I Could Break Your Heart"
As arguably the most successful winner to come from "The Voice," Cassadee is charging head first into the country scene. Her latest single is immediately intriguing because of the title, because it's a bit unusual. But after a listen, it's a catchy country ballad about wanting more power over the fate of a relationship.
The video isn't super original, but the song is catchy enough that it doesn't need crazy theatrics. Instead, it shows Cassadee singing amidst pink and purple flashing lights. She looks stunning in the video, especially when she stands inside of a crystal heart. She even smashes a heart with her foot at the end. Have you kept up with Cassadee since her win?

Coldplay - "Midnight"
In a surprising move, Coldplay pulled a Beyonce and released music without warning. After what seems like years, Coldplay is back with "Midnight," a dark and eery song with beautiful harmonies. It has an electronic vibe and Chris Martin's vocals really shine through.
The video is as spooky and odd as the song, with much of it in the woods using a cool black and white effect. If anyone has played the game Slenderman, the visuals look as eery as that. It's quite unusual and doesn't really make sense, but nevertheless it's artistic and filled with what appears to be interpretive dance. Are you excited for their upcoming album?
Little Mix - "Word Up!"
This UK girl group is quickly taking over the US, especially as performers in Demi Lovato's Neon Lights Tour. This song is different for the group because it's actually a cover of a Korn song, yet it takes on new life sung by women. The song is meant to support the UK's "Sport Relief" cause. The harmonies are on point, and the song shows off their lower vocal register.
The video feels like one big workout video, showing the four members leading exercise classes and eventually dancing with a big group at the end. It's funny and lighthearted, especially when they're juxtaposed with the middle-aged women in the locker room. It looks like the members had a lot of fun filming it, and coming off of their more emotional single "Little Me," that's refreshing to see. Are you a Little Mix fan?
