In an interview with Vanity Fair, "Game of Thrones" co-creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss revealed that they would probably wrap the show up after its seventh or eighth season.

As sad as this revelation might be for the show's fans, it does make a lot of sense. The HBO show has pretty much caught up to its source material - the "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series by George R.R. Martin.

When "Game of Thrones" began, each season followed the plot of one book in Martin's series. However, when Season 3 came along, elements of the fourth and fifth books began bleeding into the show.

And with the Season 4 premiere quickly approaching, this change in pace is slightly problematic because Martin has yet to publish "The Winds of Winter" - the sixth book in the series.

But Benioff and Weiss have met up with the author to discuss his plans for the rest of the series:

"If you know the ending, then you can lay the groundwork for it. And so we want to know how everything ends. We want to be able to set things up. So we just sat down with him and literally went through every character."

As for their decision to end the series after Season 7 or 8, Benioff said, "I think the desire to milk more out of it is what would kill it eventually, if we gave into that. ... If you look at the shows we love, it's so rare for a series to go beyond that length and maintain quality."
