It seems that we are constantly on the go and, as a result, few of us actually know what we are eating. Between having little to no time to stop for lunch, having the time to learn the interesting facts about food seems almost pointless. However, this does not make these facts any less interesting.

Below is a list of just a handful of interesting food facts you may have not known before.

  • The average American eats three burgers per week, which is a national average of 50 billion burgers per year.
  • Believe it or not, 94 percent of Americans eat pizza regularly, and 93 percent of Americans have eaten pizza within the last month.
  • Starbucks was named after one of the first mates from the book “Moby Dick.” It was almost named "Peequod” instead, which was the name of the doomed ship from the book.
  • Blueberries are among the only natural foods that are naturally blue.
  • Oatmeal really does reduce cholesterol and may help to reduce risk of cancer.
  • Although it was ruled in Nix v. Hedden by the U.S. Supreme court that tomatoes are vegetables, they are by definition fruits.
  • Pistachios are related to mangoes, which are both related to poison ivy and poison oak.
  • Although peanuts have the word “nut” in their name, they are not nuts at all. Instead, they are legumes, as they grow underground and not on trees like nuts do.
  • During the 1930s, the United States spinach growers noticed a 33 percent increase in domestic spinach consumption. This increase was attributed to a popular cartoon of the time: Popeye.
  • A 20 oz. Coke contains more sugar than a Classic Cinnabon. When you drink a 20 oz. Coke, you are drinking the equivalent to 1.77 shots of sugar.
  • Strawberries, raspberries and blackberries are not berries at all. Instead, they are aggregate fruits, which is “a fruit that contains a number of small fruits (fruitlets)...”
  • A 2010 study, conducted by the International Journal of Food Microbiology, found that 48 percent of drinks contained coliform bacteria and 100 percent contained E. coli. Although mostly harmless, it can still cause negative side effects, like diarrhea, urinary tract infections, respiratory illness and pneumonia.
  • The Daily Mail reported that ice in six out of ten restaurants has more bacteria than water from toilets.
  • On an average week, one in four Americans will drink 13 or more cups of coffee. 54 percent of Americans drink a cup of coffee per day.
  • Four men invented cotton candy, one of which was a dentist.
  • Although people often use them interchangeably, there is a difference between jam and jelly. With jam, the fruit is in the form of fruit pulp or crushed fruit, while jelly is in the form of fruit juice.
