Volkswagen May Block U.S. Deals If No Unions Are Formed

Workers at Volkswagen's factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee, voted against representation by the United Auto Workers union (UAW) last Friday, rejecting efforts by VW representatives to set up a German-style works council at the plant. Chattanooga, which builds the Passat sedan, is VW's only factory in the U.S. and one of the company's few int eh world without a works council.

President Obama has accused Republicans of trying to block the Chattanooga workforce's efforts. UAW president Bob King said he was outraged by "outside influence" at the plant. “It’s never happened in this country before that the U.S. senator, the governor, the leader of the House, the legislature here, threatened the company with no incentives, threatened workers with a loss of product,” he stated.
