Valentine's Day Brunch And A Playlist For Two
My boyfriend inspired this brunch menu. He is, much like love and some foods, very complicated. He’s originally from Sicily, currently on a diet and loves chocolate -- three things we do not have in common. So for our menu I made sure all the recipes were healthy, featured a little chocolate and weren't Italian (I’m not even going to try to compete with his grandma).
There’s an accompanying playlist, for several reasons: it’s fun to dance in the kitchen and you’re secretly giving your significant other a gift, not unlike the mixed CDs we made for our crushes circa 1998.
The Recipe: The Californians Do Breakfast Avocados
The Story: We fell in love in California, avocados are just like heaven and this is one of our songs. You're welcome.
The Song: Just Like Heaven by the Cure
2 avocados
4 eggs
Salt and pepper
Toppings: chives, feta, cherry tomatoes, basil, lime juice
Slice open the avocados and remove the pits. Crack the eggs into the avocado hole and place in baking dish. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes at 350 degrees. Serve with your choice of toppings: a salsa of tomatoes, basil and lime juice, or chives and feta.
The Recipe: Stuck in Africa Smoked Salmon Pizza
The Story: Once, I lived in Rwanda and he lived in LA, and I missed him so much I ate fish. Important note: He's an islander who loves seafood; I mostly hate fish. Love does weird things to you.
The Song: Africa by Toto
1 pre-made pizza shell
½ cup sour cream
½ lemon, juiced
2 tbsp fresh dill
1/3 lb smoked salmon
1 cucumber, thinly sliced
¼ red onion, finely chopped
3 tbsp capers (optional)
In an oven preheated to 400 degrees, cook pre-made pizza dough until golden brown. Mix sour cream lemon juice, and dill in a bowl. Spread on cooled pizza crust. Top with smoked salmon slices, red onion, and cucumber slices. Sprinkle with capers for a finishing touch.
The Recipe: Let’s Just Compromise and Drink Chocolate “Juice”
The Story: Inspired by that time we tried to be "totally LA" and do a juice diet together. I failed. Sorry about it, juices can be gross. Except this smoothie recipe is actually delish.
The Song: Five Years Time by Noah and the Whale
2 cups chocolate almond milk
2 bananas
1 cup frozen or fresh berry medley
Put in mixer and blend together. Based on your desired thickness and sweetness, you can add Greek yogurt and some honey. Or skip the berries and add some peanut butter!
I hope you enjoy these recipes, and have the sexiest, most casual brunch ever. Wishing you a day of loving and being loved!
