Team USA Takes First Lead In Medal Standings

It took 14 days of competition, but Team USA has finally braved the cold (and former frontrunners Russia and the Netherlands) en route to a table-topping 23 medals. 

The United States now have seven gold medals, only trailing Norway and Germany, who have nine and eight golds respectively. 

Alpine skier Ted Ligety grabbed headlines with his win in the men’s giant slalom. It is the U.S. ski team’s first gold medal in Sochi. 

Building on his previous Olympic successes, 29-year-old Ligety became the second American to win two gold medals in alpine skiing.
