Maria Hoefl-Riesch won the Women’s Super Combined on Monday in Sochi after a scorchingly fast slalom run made up for her less than stellar finish in the downhill portion.

Super Combined is a competition which combines the fastest and scariest alpine event, downhill, with the most technical and demanding alpine event, slalom.

Each competitor gets one run on the downhill course and one run on the slalom course, both of their times added together equals their overall time.

Riesch, a slalom specialist, finished fifth in the downhill section, but made all the time up with a scorching slalom run that shot her in to first place.

The only person who had a legitimate shot at challenging Riesch was American Julia Mancuso, also a slalom specialist, who had somewhat surprisingly managed to win the downhill portion. Unfortunately for Mancuso, she was not able to keep up with the German’s time on the slalom course and could only finish third, bringing home a bronze for the Americans.

Nicole Hosp of Austria took silver, .40 seconds behind the German gold medalist.
