With the 86th Annual Academy Awards approaching, we can’t help but feel anxious to see the gorgeous (and sometimes horrific) red carpets looks that A-List actors bring to the table. While the goal is to make it on to every best dressed list, these lovely actresses missed the mark in the hair and makeup department, taking away from an ensemble that might have otherwise had us screaming for joy. Unfortunately, these hair and makeup mishaps had us screaming for help. Here, we take a look back at the all-time biggest beauty blunders on the red carpet.

1. Cher, 1986

Cher has always been one to make a statement, but this bird-like headpiece is much too overwhelming and inappropriate for such a reputable awards ceremony. While this might work for a concert performance or music video, it’s far too crazy and theatrical for the Academy Awards.

2. Helena Bonham Carter, 1987

Today, Helena Bonham Carter can wear whatever she wants on the red carpet and we have all learned to accept it. She is eccentric, creative, and not afraid to show off her unique style. This look that she showed off at the 1987 Oscars, however, is tragic.

Long before she found her niche, it appears as though Bonham Carter did not care at all. Everything from her frizzy hair to absent makeup and lack of grooming make us all the more thankful for the wonderfully unexpected looks she has sported in recent years.

3. Madonna, 1998

Yes, it is difficult to question anything that Madonna does, but why did she choose these uneven ringlets and that blue-violet eye shadow? Had Madge went with a less harsh shade of shadow and tousled her hair to match her edgy dress, the look would have been on point.

4. Angelina Jolie, 2000

Way before Angelina Jolie was elegantly gracing the red carpet with Brad Pitt by her side, she was an image of Morticia Adams. The extremely long black tresses combined with makeup that washed out her iconic, captivating features made for a look that was a definite downer.

5. Jennifer Lopez, 2002

It is rare to find anyone who can truly pull off a bouffant, and our beloved JLo is no exception. Sadly, this hairstyle looks like an oversized prom 'do gone wrong. JLo, when donning big hair, please take care.

6. Cloris Leachman, 2003

In 2003, there seemed to be an unidentified specimen stemming from the side of Cloris Leachman’s head. Though there is a need to go all-out and accessorize on the red carpet, a small, shiny barrette would have sufficed.

7. Scarlett Johansson, 2005

Scarlett Johansson is a classic beauty, always exuding grace and charm, but her hair in 2005 was quite frightening. Just when the look seemed to be only slightly odd, she turned around, revealing a mess of orange string.

Johansson's porcelain skin was complemented by beautiful makeup, but the silly string tangled in the back of her hair must have been a struggle to remove.

8. Lisa Rinna, 2009

Lisa Rinna’s hair in 2009 was unnecessarily big and overly sculpted. Her makeup may have looked decent if we could manage to look past her insane silicone-plumped lips. Thankfully, Rinna felt the same way and went on to remove the silicone the following year

9. Sharon Stone, 2011

Dearest Sharon Stone: between the dark eyes, dark lips, big hair, and overall sloppiness, you really have brought Cruella Deville to life. Drop the heavy, caked-on makeup and opt for something that brings out your pretty blue eyes in a subtle and natural way.
