The Pentagon unveiled a new defense spending bill this morning, which secretary of Chuck Hagel says will shrink the Army to its smallest size since just after the Second World War.

In addition, Hagel proposes cutting an entire class of Air Force jets in an impressive effort to reduce costs.

The Army will be shrunk by more than 100,000 personnel to around 450,000 soldiers in an attempt to reduce the extremely high costs associated with having so many active duty personnel.

Don’t expect this bill to pass easily, however, as the defense industry and congress both have very strong motivations to oppose the bill. The defense industry will be scared that it will lose massive government contracts and congressmen and women will be worried about base closings and job losses in their districts.

According to the BBC, “under the proposed cuts the military would still be to defeat any adversary…but be too small to engage in protracted foreign occupations.”
