Luis Aragones: Former Spanish Manager Dies At 75
His death resulted waves of remorseful comments on Twitter, some of which were from Spanish internationals including Juan Mata, Xavi Alonso and Sergio Ramos.
Aragones is known for leading the team to win its first major championship title in 44 years. Some of the major changes that he implemented during his spell influenced the team from the locker room onto the pitch.
He insistently dropped the legendary captain Raul and veteran side back Michel Salgado from the national team regardless of their club performance, in order to renew the power relation and to establish his irrefutable managerial position in the team.
Most importantly, he applied the short passing game in the midfield revolving around Barcelona players, such as Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets, to enhance the team’s possession in the games. Aragones’ alternation in both team demographic and play style laid a solid foundation for Vicente del Bosque to win Spain’s the first world cup in 2010, and defend their Euro title in 2012.
A former professional player himself, Aragones scored 172 goals in 372 games for Athletico Madrid and scored 13 goals representing the country prior to his retirement.
During his coaching a career, he famously guided Barcelona and Athletico Madrid to Copa del Rey success four times in total, before taking over the national team in 2004.
