The longest-serving U.S. Representative retired on Monday because he became disillusioned with the atmosphere in Congress.

John Dingell (D-MI) said partisanship divides and an overall neglect to act in the best interest of the people caused him to no longer enjoy his job.

Although he no longer wants the seat he has held since 1955, his wife, a former General Motors executive, is expected to run.

During Dingell’s tenure, he was an advocate for the auto industry but also supported environmental causes. He backed the Affordable Care Act, which he viewed as a tribute to his late father, who also served the district and took on universal health care as his primary cause.
