Hagel: Pentagon Preparing For 2014 Afghanistan Exit

Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel announced on Tuesday that President Obama has ordered the Pentagon to prepare for the total withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014. 

After a phone call to Afghan President Hamid Karzai, President Obama said that the U.S. would remove forces unless Karzai signs the Bilateral Security Agrreement, which outlines the future of U.S. military involvement in the region.  Secretary Hagel said that Karazi will not sign the agreement, which has already been greatly delayed.

Obama and Hagel have yet to decide how many troops will remain in Afghanistan after the removal of combat forces. It is likely to be around 10,000 troops, with 5,000 NATO and international forces, that would remain at bases in Afghanistan until 2015.
