Actress Cindy Lee Garcia whose voice was dubbed over the film has had ongoing death threats since it was first aired in 2012. 

"This is a troubling case," said Chief Judge Alex Kozinski. "Garcia was duped into providing an artistic performance that was used in a way she could not have foreseen".

Garcia sued after learning that the film incorporated a clip she had made for a different movie, she claimed she was mislead my the film makers. 

The film that has stirred a lot of media attention and public debate, depicted Prophet Mohammed as inane and misogynistic. It spawned anti-American unrest amongst Muslim countries in 2012. 

In a statement, Google said: "We strongly disagree with this ruling and will fight it." Google argued that the film has now become an important part of public debate and should not be taken down.
